Education is a vital aspect of a person and everyone shoud have the right to it. Unfortunately, this is not the case in our world today -- the real world. When we were young, my parents would usually say to me and my sisters that nowadays, education is a privilege since not everyone can afford it. Some kids cannot go to school because they cannot afford it or they don't have the time because they have to make a living since they're considered as the bread winners of their family. Aside from my parent's guidance and wisdom, staying in school boosted my way of thinking and developed my opinions in certain aspects. My teachers challenge me to answer questions and as I get older, the challenge for me is to question them back. If it weren't for school, I may not be able to contribute as a groupmate, as someone part of an organization, and as part of the community.
Last weekend, my fellow CSR classmates and I went to Hagonoy, Bulacan to visit Sta. Monica Elementary School to paint armchairs and desks, and to construct an elevated pavement. The school was one of the victims of the recent typhoon known as Lando, which is internationally known as Koppu. Because of the storm, the armchairs were damaged and would need to be repaired/repainted to be used by the students. As an additional team effort, we also wanted to build an elevated pathway so that everytime it rains, there will be enough room for the students to stay on that pavement and not to suffer walking along the flood.
Sadly, we didn't get to know the children who studied in this school. Luckily, we have the teachers to represent them as they personally deal with these children day by day. We got to know how our activity helped them and how would it affect the children.
One week passed and we came back to Sta Monica so we could see how effective our work is for the students and faculty. It's amazing to hear the happy responses from the teachers and the "engineers" who helped us with the construction. They only thought of the children's sake which is a similar sentiment for us.
